Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club’s pursuit of a high-ticket left-back has taken a back seat.
City are expected to be on the lookout for a new left-sided full-back, with Benjamin Mendy’s career at the club all but over.
Pep Guardiola has been using Joao Cancelo as his preferred option in the position, and the Portuguese international has excelled as well.
However, he is naturally a right-back, while backup option Oleksandr Zinchenko’s future has been called into action due to his reduced minutes.
Nathan Ake is another player who is capable of slotting in at left-back. However, the Dutchman would not provide the same level of tactical flexibility and attacking intent that someone like Cancelo does.
So, it makes sense for the Cityzens to bring in a new left-back who can provide cover for Cancelo and grow into the role in the years to come.
However, in an exclusive report in the Daily Mail by top Manchester City journalist Jack Gaughan, the search for a left-back was set to be put on hold to allow funds for a clinical number nine – namely Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Cancelo is the best left-back anyway.”

“I’d be happy with trusting Cancelo and Zinchenko if it meant we got Haaland over the line.”

“I don’t think they need one. Got Cancelo looking amazing there with Zinchenko as cover then Walker at right-back and Pedro Porro can be cover for him next season.”

“Okay but can we not forget about this one please. Get that left back secured and we’re winning it all.”

“I’m happy with our left back options and like the look of Esbrand coming through. If we’re getting Haaland a good back up for Rodri should be the other priority to keep the pressure on him.”

“LB isn’t really necessary as of now, we still have Cancelo and Zinchenko, plus Ake can play there as well. So its better to go after Haaland and a Fernandinho replacement this summer.”

“Think this will be a top, top transfer window if we can get Haaland alone, and even better if we can get a good left back.”
