Arsenal player William Saliba insists that his club will do better next season to challenge Manchester City and probably displace Pep Guardiola’s side as the Premier League champions after winning the title for the fourth time in a row last campaign.
Manchester City have over the past few years become a dominant force in the English top-flight league, and many big teams are determined to upgrade to their level. The Cityzens are being used to measure success in the league, as other clubs believe they must be better than them to stand a chance of winning the league title.
However, in the last few years, only Liverpool and Arsenal have tried to challenge the City dominance. Jürgen Kloop’s Liverpool eventually emerged victorious in 2019/20 season after many attempts, while Arsenal are still searching for an opportunity to overthrow Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Gunners have had two attempts and failed to make it count at the crucial moment even though the league was in their control. Last campaign, they suffered a shocking defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates with just a few games left to play.
The defeat turned out to be a major setback for their determination to win the league title for the first time in 20 years, as Manchester City went on to win it once again on the final day after beating West Ham United 3-1.
Speaking ahead of the forthcoming season, William Saliba, claimed that they have proved that they could match their opponents, particularly Pep Guardiola’s team, in the title race. He added that they gave Manchester City a tough time last campaign when they met on three different occasions.
“We played against them three times [last season] and we made them struggle. They feel and we feel that we are close to them. Next year, we will have an even better war,” the Arsenal player said.
