Enzo Maresca reveals Manchester City rotation plans ahead of crucial FC Porto clash
Enzo Maresca has given Manchester City supporters an important insight into his plans for the club’s Champions League opener against FC Porto.
The City boss is preparing for his first European match in charge since succeeding Pep Guardiola in June, and he has already confirmed that several players are expected to receive minutes in Portugal.
Manchester City travel to face Porto on Tuesday night after maintaining their perfect Premier League start with a 1-0 victory over Coventry City.
However, the fixture schedule is about to become considerably more demanding.
City will face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, giving Maresca little time to recover his players between two major fixtures.

“The first game is on Tuesday,” Maresca explained. “So the focus has to be on the Tuesday game, then after that we focus on the next one.”

The Manchester derby may be one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the season, but Maresca understands that overlooking Porto could create serious problems.
City need to begin their Champions League campaign positively.
At the same time, the manager must ensure his squad remains fresh enough to handle the demanding schedule ahead.
Several Manchester City players are set for Champions League minutes
Maresca has already indicated that supporters can expect to see some less-established players involved against Porto.
Ayoub Bouaddi, Ryan McAidoo and Iliman Ndiaye are among the players who could receive opportunities.
The manager highlighted the fact that these players have limited or no Champions League experience and suggested that Tuesday will provide an opportunity to introduce them to European football.
“I think with Ayoubb, with Ryan McAidoo, as you said, Iliman Ndiaye they probably haven’t played in the Champions League yet,” Maresca said.
“But they need to start.”
That could be particularly significant for Ndiaye.
The Senegal international only recently joined Manchester City and made his first appearance for the club against Coventry.
Giving him Champions League minutes so soon after his arrival would allow him to gain valuable experience while also giving Maresca another opportunity to assess how he adapts to European competition.
Iliman Ndiaye could benefit from the rotation
Ndiaye’s involvement could be one of the most interesting aspects of Manchester City’s team selection.
The winger arrived at City with considerable expectations, but he is still learning Maresca’s tactical requirements.
His debut against Coventry showed promising signs, particularly his ability to carry the ball and contribute defensively.
However, his positional understanding is still developing.
A Champions League appearance would give him another opportunity to learn.
Maresca’s system requires attacking players to understand exactly when to stay wide, when to move inside and when to attack the space behind the opposition defence.

“But for sure we need to protect Erling because, again, the season is very long and he’s going to have games where he needs to recover.”

“It depends a little bit on the game plan,” Maresca explained. “It depends a little bit on the game.”
He added that Semenyo has played as a number nine in the past and that Foden has sometimes played as a false nine.

If Maresca decides Haaland needs a rest, City do not necessarily have to replace him with a traditional striker.
Instead, the manager could alter the structure of the attack.
