Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticized the demanding playing schedule that professional footballers are facing in the modern game, calling it ‘not normal’. Despite his team’s victory in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, Guardiola expressed frustration over the toll that the game took on his players.
Guardiola pointed out that City had to play a gruelling Champions League quarter final against Real Madrid just before their match against Chelsea, ultimately losing on penalties. He questioned why his team did not get an extra day of rest like other teams in the Premier League who were not involved in European competitions.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Guardiola emphasized the need for players’ health and questioned the scheduling decisions that put his team at a disadvantage. He expressed frustration over the demanding schedule and lack of consideration given to City’s players, calling for more rest to prepare for important matches like the FA Cup semi-final.
