Manchester United are making moves to secure the signing of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong ahead of rivals Manchester City this summer. The Red Devils are preparing for a period of transformation following the acquisition of 27.7% of the club by Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year.
Ratcliffe and his company INEOS have taken control of the football operations at the club, with plans to revamp the recruitment department and invest in infrastructure. This includes the appointment of a new CEO, Omar Berrada, and the signing of Southampton’s Jason Wilcox as the new technical director.
Rumors suggest that up to ten players could be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season, and reports from Spanish publication ‘Nacional’ indicate that one of INEOS’ main transfer targets is Frenkie de Jong. The club has reportedly made an offer of €90m to Barcelona in order to prevent him from joining rivals Manchester City.
It is believed that Manchester United are determined to sign the Dutch international this summer, as Barcelona may need to sell players to raise funds for their own recruitment. De Jong’s injuries and form have reportedly made Barcelona consider selling him, especially with the departure of Xavi in the summer.
The Catalan giants are asking for €90m for De Jong, who is demanding around €30m a year in wages. Manchester United are willing to meet these demands as they aim to secure his signature and bring him to the Premier League. However, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is also interested in signing De Jong as a long-term replacement for Ilkay Gundogan. Guardiola views the midfielder as a valuable addition to his squad and is ready to compete with Manchester United for his signature.
