Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on the condition of goalkeeper Ederson, affecting their upcoming Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Ederson sustained a thigh injury during the match against Liverpool and had to be substituted, ruling him out for the next three to four weeks. This rules him out for the FA Cup match and puts his availability for the Arsenal game in doubt.
Fans were expecting Stefan Ortega to start in place of Ederson for both games, but Guardiola’s latest update brings hope of an earlier return for the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Guardiola mentioned in a press conference ahead of City’s FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle that Ederson is improving and could be back in action after the international break.
“Ederson is getting better. Hopefully after the international break he will be ready,” said Guardiola. “Tomorrow for sure (he will not play), and after we will have two weeks off. After we will come back, next Wednesday/Thursday, and we will see how he feels. Hopefully as soon as possible.”
Manchester City is aiming for another appearance at Wembley Stadium and their third FA Cup victory under Guardiola’s leadership. They hope to continue their success from the previous season.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding Ortega’s future, as other clubs are interested in signing him as Manchester City’s backup goalkeeper due to his exceptional skills.
Ortega’s contract with City ends next season, and the club has presented a new deal for him and his representatives to consider in the upcoming months.
