Former professional footballer Chris Sutton has sparked controversy by claiming that Manchester City has four midfielders who are superior to Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.

This bold statement has raised questions about Fernandes’ abilities and whether he could thrive at a club like City.

Sutton’s comments came during an episode of the Daily Mail’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast, where he confidently stated that Fernandes would not make it into City’s starting XI.

Instead, Sutton named Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden as the players he believes are better than Fernandes in City’s midfield.

While acknowledging Fernandes’ passing abilities, Sutton emphasized the elite level of talent present in City’s midfield. He praised the quality and depth of City’s options, highlighting their exceptional skill and consistency on the pitch.

He said: “These debates always come up, either you think of the Manchester City options in midfield and you know, [Kevin] De Bruyne, Rodri, [Bernardo] Silva, [Phil] Foden, I don’t think Bruno’s [Fernandes] better than any of those.”

“I’m not disputing that [he’s a lovely passer] but given a straight pick with the four players I’ve mentioned, I don’t know. It’s a debate to be had and everybody has their own preference, I’m not trying to dig Bruno out for that. But Manchester City, they are absolutely elite.”

“Bruno is an excellent footballer, you’ve [journalist Ian Ladyman] made some really good points about him but I don’t think he’d get into that Manchester City midfield ahead of the players I’ve mentioned.”

Sutton’s remarks have ignited a debate among football fans and experts, with some agreeing with his assessment while others defend Fernandes’ impact and contributions to Manchester United.

The debate underscores the high standards set by top clubs like Manchester City and the competition for places in their star-studded lineup.

As Fernandes continues to showcase his talent at Manchester United, he faces the challenge of proving his worth in the elite football landscape.

At 30 years old, the Portuguese international must elevate his game and deliver consistent performances to cement his status among the best midfielders in the world.

Sutton’s comments serve as a reminder of the fierce competition and high expectations in top-level football, where players like Fernandes must continually strive to improve and make their mark on the sport.

Only time will tell if Fernandes can rise to the challenge and compete with the elite midfielders at clubs like Manchester City.
