Pep Guardiola recently hinted in an interview that he might consider extending his contract at Manchester City following the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s upcoming departure from Liverpool.
Klopp is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, stating that one of the reasons for his departure is a lack of energy to continue in his role as manager.
After guiding his team to a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup, Guardiola was asked about his own energy levels and how it could affect his future at City.
The Spaniard, whose current contract at City expires in 2025, expressed his desire to continue as City’s manager for at least one more year and potentially extend beyond that.
He said: “I’m fine. I want to do it still for one more year, and maybe extend.”
Guardiola had signed a contract extension in November 2022, which would see him spend nine years at the Etihad Stadium, a tenure equivalent to Klopp’s at Liverpool.
During his time at City, Guardiola has achieved considerable success, winning 14 major titles, and is now seeking to make history by potentially securing a fourth consecutive Premier League trophy this season.
While discussions about his extension may take place in the future, the club should prioritize securing Guardiola’s signature to keep him at City for as long as possible.
However, Guardiola’s main focus at the moment is helping his team regain the titles they secured last season, establishing itself as the primary goal before potential talks about his future can take place.
With City pushing for success, they should take the necessary steps behind the scenes to retain Guardiola as their manager.
