Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips was full of praise last night for Stefan Ortega as the 30-year-old goalkeeper kept a clean sheet for the Cityzens in their 2-0 League Cup win against Chelsea.
Speaking to City’s official Twitter account after the impressive result against the Blues, the summer signing from Leeds United was full of praise for Ortega, with Phillips saying: “Stefan was unbelievable. He kept a clean sheet, and some of the saves he made were amazing.”
Ortega was named Man of the Match as the former Bundesliga shot-stopper enjoyed his best performance yet for City, with the keeper only making his third-ever appearance for the Manchester giants after signing for the club this summer from Arminia Bielefeld.
The German shot-stopper made impressive saves against the likes of Christian Pulisic and Chelsea youngster Lewis Hall to keep a clean sheet in the League Cup and to progress City to the next round, where Pep Guardiola’s side are now likely the clear favourites for the competition.
Both Arsenal and Tottenham were eliminated last night with West Ham also crashing out of the competition, and with City already taking out Chelsea, Ortega’s performance against the Blues might have just put the reigning Premier League champions on the road to another triumph in the League Cup.
City have had quite the relationship with the League Cup in recent years, with the Manchester side winning the competition six times since 2014 and now looking set to win it again this campaign. And for Ortega, the German could play a big role in helping the Blue Moon claiming a seventh title.
Indeed, the keeper was sensational last night for Chelsea, as explained by Phillips. And with City looking strong favourites already to win the League Cup, there’s a goof chance that the keeper will feature heavily in the competition with games coming thick-and-fast after the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.
