Yaya Toure picks Mikel Arteta over Pep Guardiola when asked to choose between the pair

Yaya Toure has picked Mikel Arteta over his former manager Pep Guardiola when asked to choose between the pair.

Toure played under Guardiola at Barcelona, winning both La Liga and the Champions League, before reuniting with the Spaniard at Manchester City.

He would go on to win three Premier League titles at the Etihad but his relationship with Guardiola would become strained towards the end of his eight-year spell in English football.

Toure was rarely used in his final season with City, the 2017-18 campaign, with his only start in the Premier League coming on the final day when the title was already secured.

After leaving for Olympiacos that summer, Toure controversially claimed Guardiola had “problems with Africans wherever he goes”.

“It got to the point I asked myself if it was because of my colour. I am not the first. Other Barcelona players asked the question,” Toure told France Football at the time.

Meanwhile, Toure’s agent Dmitri Seluk described Guardiola as a “worthless person” and claimed that his treatment of the midfielder had convinced fans to cast an “African curse” on the City boss, preventing him from ever winning the Champions League again.

Toure later apologised for his comments but revealed earlier this year that his attempts to rebuild bridges with Guardiola had been ignored by the City manager.

He has now taken another, more light-hearted, dig at Guardiola.

Appearing on Ben Foster’s podcast Fozcast, Toure selected Guardiola’s former assistant Arteta over the City manager when asked to pick between the two coaches.

After Toure names Arteta, Foster says: “Oooooh”, seemingly aware of the controversy behind his pick.

Arteta and Guardiola and set to go head-to-head for the Premier League title this season.

Arteta’s Arsenal currently have a two-point advantage over City at the top of the Premier League.
