Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has broken his silence after his late miss against Liverpool in the FA Community Shield last weekend and Pep Guardiola has fired a warning to his critics.
The former Borussia Dortmund striker insists he will use it as motivation when the current champions take on West Ham on Sunday.
“When I look back, it’s like, ‘How can you miss there?’” he told the Athletic.
“But, you know, this will probably happen to me again. That’s football. You say you didn’t sleep well and I never sleep good after games.
“But it’s kind of motivation, to score or to do something in the next game. It’s the same when you score two goals – ‘Ah, I want to do it again!’ So actually, no matter what happens it’s motivation and that’s what’s good about it. But, of course, it is not a good feeling! It’s the worst feeling ever!”
City boss Pep Guardiola has also dismissed any criticism of the striker and has warned rivals to ‘be careful’ with what they say about Haaland.
“He’ll score goals,” Guardiola said in an interview with Sky Sports. “That’s why the club decided to take him. Like many clubs (we wanted him) and we are lucky to have him.
“His ability with his feet, his vision in the pass. He needs time just for the fact he came from a long time without playing as he was injured. We’re going to adapt to him in the final third and he’s going to adapt to the way we play.
“He will do his job, like he’s done all of his career and the rest, the team will help him. The people have doubts but be careful what you say. He’s going to deny all the opinions because he’s going to score goals.”
