Zack Steffen is to join Middlesbrough on a season-long loan with Manchester City set to sign free agent goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to replace him.
The 27-year-old wants to play regularly to cement his position in the United States World Cup squad.
With Ederson secure in the number one spot at City, Steffen knows there is no chance of achieving that if he remains at the Etihad Stadium.
Manager Pep Guardiola has agreed to let Steffen, whose deal with City runs until 2025, leave.
On Tuesday afternoon, Alex Crook of talkSPORT first broke the story about Steffen moving to Middlesbrough on loan for next season. The news was then corroborated by Tyrone Marshall from the Manchester Evening News soon after.
Middlesbrough had been looking to sign a goalkeeper this summer and they have beaten competition from other Championship sides to land Steffen.
Steffen is expected to take up the number one spot for Chris Wilder’s side in the Championship next season.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
