Pep Guardiola made a sly dig at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after Mohamed Salah won his second Football Writer’s Association Player of the Year Award.
Salah became only the ninth player in history to win the award twice, claiming the 2021-2022 prize for his incredible campaign that has helped spearhead Liverpool’s challenge for the Premier League against Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The Egyptian, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions for Klopp’s quadruple chasing team this season, beat City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne into second place.
Guardiola was asked about the Egyptian’s recently announced success, he offered congratulations to Salah, but laced the compliment with what might be perceived as a back-handed swipe at Klopp.
“Congratulations to Salah. Jurgen said they have the best keeper, the second-best keeper in the world, the best central defender, the best holding midfielder, the best striker. So it’s normal they win all the awards,” he said.
When asked if City star Kevin De Bruyne would be disappointed not have to won this year’s award, Guardiola shrugged his shoulders and added: “He’s won it before.”
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City supporters.
