Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola have sent Newcastle United a message pleading with them to score many goals in their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday.
The Reds were involved in a tussle with La Liga side Villarreal in the Champions League first-leg on Wednesday. Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Villarreal 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday and now go away to Newcastle this weekend.
Manchester City, their Premier League title-rivals were involved in a ferocious end-to-end tussle with La Liga leaders Real Madrid in the Champions League first-leg on Tuesday. City ran out 4-3 winners in the energy-sapping clash at the Etihad and now their attention turns to a trip to Elland Road on Saturday evening.
It’s a crucial game at the top of the table as any dropped points from Liverpool and City at this stage could be crucial in the context of the Premier League.
For City and Liverpool to be tied after 38 games would mean both teams dropping points in the five games that remain.
Though the boss believes that is possible, he doesn’t believe the goal difference factor will come into play.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s matches, Guardiola does not think that the title race will be determined by the finest of margins via goal difference. The Man City boss then had a message for Liverpool’s opponents this afternoon, Newcastle.
“I don’t think that is going to happen. It could but I don’t think so,” Guardiola told said.
“The difference is one point. If we draw and they win, [Liverpool are ahead]. Of course if we can score as many goals as possible, I encourage Newcastle to score as many goals as possible!”
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City fans, who are hopeful of a positive result from Newcastle.
