Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has conceded that the Bundesliga club will be unable to compete financially with Manchester City if they do submit a proposal to Erling Haaland.
The Blues are trying to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker as they look to belatedly replace Sergio Aguero in their team, having failed to land a marquee forward in the last summer transfer window.
The Citizens are believed to be leading the race for the 21-year-old’s signature, while La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on his situation.
In an interview with German newspaper BILD this week, Dortmund’s chief executive officer Hans Joachim Watzke had admitted that the Bundesliga outfit will be unable to compete financially with Manchester City should they come in for their star forward in the summer transfer window.
“We currently know nothing concrete from the players’ side, nor has anyone approached us. But we know that we can’t keep up financially if Manchester City come (for Erling Haaland),” he told BILD.
“We have already experienced this a few times. We lost (Robert) Lewandowski to Bayern Munich in 2014 and (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang to Arsenal in 2018. But to be honest, we have also always created a new star.”
These Watzke’s comments comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
