Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Ferran Torres left for Barcelona because they offered him the opportunity to be their ‘franchise player’ – something Guardiola could not.
The 21-year-old returns to Spain, where he played for Valencia before joining City in the offseason of 2020 with a reputation of being one of Europe’s best young players.
Torres scored 16 goals in 43 appearances for City since joining from Valencia last year but was never a regular because of the many attacking options available to manager Pep Guardiola.
He was officially confirmed as a Barcelona player on Tuesday after City accepted a bid of €55 million with another €10m in add-ons to end his 18-month stay at the Etihad.
According to Sam Lee of The Athletic, City did not want to sell Torres this time around either, but that once the forward relayed all this to Guardiola, the move was sanctioned as the boss appreciated the size of the opportunity and knew he could not offer similar in Manchester.
According to The Athletic journalist, Torres had been struggling to live away from his family and friends in Manchester, had been frustrated by a perceived lack of opportunities to play, and felt City would soon sign a big-name striker anyway.
The report was shared on Twitter and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters, who took to the social media platform to share their thoughts and opinions.
Pep is right, if he wants to leave, he should. Shame because he was quality

I don’t believe the limited opportunities thing …I do understand the struggling living away from home side of it though

Pep preferred players out of form over him when he’s on a momentum. Can’t fault him. Even after scoring a hat-trick and a brace, Pep picked players who are out of form over him. If I were him, I would’ve done the same thing.
