Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has said on his YouTube channel that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will not be able to sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.
The 26-year-old struggled for starts under Pep Guardiola last term and has seemingly fallen behind Jack Grealish in the Etihad pecking order since his compatriot’s £100m arrival.
Sterling is understood to be ‘fighting’ for his future at the Etihad Stadium, where his contract now has just under two years left to run, and talks over an extension have not led to a positive solution.
The Daily Star report over the weekend that Arsenal are keen to sign the 26-year-old, with his future at Manchester City currently uncertain.
Mikel Arteta is said to be a huge admirer of the England winger, developing a good relationship with him during his time as Pep Guardiola’s number two at City.
However, the former Manchester United defender does not think that Arsenal or Tottenham will be able to sign the England Man.
“I will say it now. If Raheem, if he continues like this, Raheem will not be there next season,’ Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.
“He can’t sit on the bench, he is not that type of guy. He is a winner, he wants to win.”
“Tottenham can’t get in the mix, Arsenal can’t get in the mix with a Sterling right now,” he added.
Sterling, who was a key player in England reaching the Euro 2020 final in the summer, has started just two of City’s six Premier League games so far this term.
The England International has improved immeasurably since making the move from Liverpool to City in 2015. He has scored 73 league goals in just 168 league games under the Spaniard.
