Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Aleks Zinchenko is set to start the season as the club’s first choice left-back after an excellent season for club and country.
The full-back spot in particular remains an issue throughout Pep Guardiola’s time at the club, with Benjamin Mendy failing to push his game on. The French international has had his fair share of troubles with recurrent injuries coupled with poor form and is starting to turn into a liability for Pep Guardiola.
The use of Zinchenko provided another short-term solution for the premier league champions. Despite the fact he is not a nailed-on starter for Pep Guardiola’s side, the 24-year-old defender has proven to be a great option within the squad.
The Ukrainian, who Pep Guardiola has developed from a promising playmaker into a solid inverted full-back, made the spot his own in the second half of the season.
According to Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News this week, the 24 year-old is set to start the new season as Pep Guardiola’s first choice left-back, as the club look to prioritise other positions in the summer transfer market, with enough promise shown in the position by Joao Cancelo and Nathan Ake.
The report claims City will not be making moves for a left-sided full-back who will cost a “significant amount”, seemingly ruling out potential moves for either Nuno Mendes of Sporting Lisbon, as well as Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, who have been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad in recent weeks.
Zinchenko joined City in July 2016 for just £1.5 million in a deal that didn’t garner much attention in the Premier League. Fast forward five years and the signing has proved to be one of Guardiola’s biggest bargains.
In reaction to the report shared on Twitter by Man City Xtra and City Chief, many Man City fans have expressed their thoughts and opinions.

Well deserved but need someone giving him competition every week like how cancelo did to walker last year

I wouldn’t mind him as a second LB but it’s ridiculous that a club like us would openly communicate that an makeshift defender, which Zinchenko is, is going to be our first choice LB player. That’s madness and ridiculous at the same time.
