Former Aston Villa midfielder Darren Bent believes Southampton striker Danny Ings would score more goals for Manchester City than current striker Gabriel Jesus.
The Citizens are expected to be in the market for a new striker at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, with the club’s all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero potentially leaving on a free transfer.
Skysport reported on Monday that City are preparing a possible move for Southampton striker Danny Ings as a replacement for Sergio Aguero this Summer.
Bent reckons signing Ings would be a no-brainer for the Citizens and who would score more for City than Jesus Gabriel.
Bent told talkSPORT: “If you’re talking about someone replacing Aguero, it’s virtually impossible, you’re not going to find someone who can come in and do what he has done at that club.
“But I really like the idea of Danny Ings going there, I think he’s a very very good centre forward and he’s been brilliant over the last couple of seasons. He has been plagued by injuries, but I think he’d do a job there.
“You put him around better players who create so many opportunities, he is an unbelievable finisher, really really good finisher, so if you put him in situations where he can score goal I can guarantee you he’d score more goals in that team than Gabriel Jesus.”
“The only thing that would put people off this signing is snobbery. Fans probably think they should be going for players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, but signing a player of Ings’ quality is a no-brainer.”
“He’s a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and if I was at Man City, I’d get him in now, get someone like him in the door for decent money, and then go after your Haalands or your Mbappes.”
The 28-year-old striker has bagged eight goals in 22 Premier League appearances this term for the Saints, while Jesus has seven in 21 matches for the Citizens.
Signing Ings with his fitness history, comes with a risk, but he has proven he can do the business regardless of the calibre of player around him.
With eight goals and two assists in 22 league appearances this season so far, Ings in a Man City side with lots of talents will comes with a guaranteed nose for Premier League goals.
