Manchester City fans were certainly pleased with Benjamin Mendy’s brilliant performance in the Carabao Cup win at Burnley, amid talk the Citizens are lining up some strong competition for him.
The Frenchman improved on Sunday’s shocker as he seemed far more comfortable with Laporte next to him. His cross for the goal was intelligent, and not the first he had delivered in the game.
This was a good response to the 5-2 humiliation by Leicester though Saturday’s Premier League trip to Leeds may prove a more exacting test for him.
Mendy is still an excellent attacking full-back and there are few better at delivering the ball from wide areas.
Injuries, though, have taken their toll. Mendy’s career continues to be disrupted by repeated set-backs, and by now he looks significantly less athletic, less mobile than he did when he first arrived at the club in 2017.
The France defender despite putting in a strong showing against Burnley on Wednesday, that may not stop City from exploring other options in the coming days.
With just four days of the transfer window still remaining, a new left-back could yet arrive at the Etihad Stadium. The Blues are reportedly to have stepped up their pursuit of Ajax left back Nicolas Tagliafico.

If only he got consistency
— Stevie (@Stevie_omosh) September 30, 2020
What ?? He definitely is first team quality, just isn’t consistent enough to be a starter.
Just appreciate his good game and stop being negative— GabyZezus (@GabyZezus) September 30, 2020
Mendy shouldn’t play against Leeds. They will crush him. Burnley is weak team.

Always been good going forward, it’s his defending that’s the issue. Every time a offensive team attack us down wing he’s found wanting. He was always going to look gd when Burnley just sit back. Good performance tho for his attacking attributes but not tested to defend today.

Man found out he’s going to become second choice and chose to put on a show
— DeBruyne Sauce (@DeBruyneSauce) September 30, 2020
Because burnley don’t attack fullbacks. They play long balls to their big CFs. Mendy should only play 2 games, burnley home and away. Any winger would destroy this guy. He just wasn attacked today

No one cares, our new left back is coming.
