Why Pep Guardiola is so keen on summer move for Ferran Torres

Manchester City have reached total agreement to make Valencia winger Ferran Torres their first summer signing.

Ferran, whose current contract ends in June 2021 is apparently top of Pep Guardiola’s wish list in terms of potential reinforcements in wide attacking positions.

According to Eurosport, Manchester City have reach a ‘total agreement’ with Valencia winger Ferran Torres. Guardiola may soon be able to coach Ferran Torres, one of Spain’s greatest talents.

Is Ferran Torres good enough for Man City?

The teenager has caught the eye with his one-on-one ability off either foot, quick decision-making, eye for a pass and burgeoning nose for goal. His ability to recognize an opening and take it is what separates him from the rest.

Torres is among La Liga’s trickiest wingers, averaging close to two successful dribbles per game. When he’s not getting chalk on his boots, the 20-year-old drifts dangerously between the lines and can operate as an attacking midfielder.

Torres became the second player born in 2000 to score a Liga goal (after Real Madrid prodigy Vinícius Júnior) When he found the net against Celta in January.

What Role Will He Have in City’s Squad?

It’s hard to envision Torres as an automatic starter from the very start of the 2020/21 season.

Given Raheem Sterling’s excellent form throughout last season, he’ll have to contend for the right-wing role against the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva, though the latter could find himself playing centrally more often next term.

With Pep preferring to have two wingers who can cut inside and create space for his attacking full-backs, Torres will likely have to bide his time.

What people say about Ferran

Julien Laurens (ENPS): “[He is] one of the most gifted players of his generation, not just in Spain but in the whole of Europe. A player of such quality with just one year left on his contract will become a bargain because he is easily someone who could cost you €100m. It could be a very good coup for City if they could get him.”

Marcelino, Valencia coach; “The competitive spirit he brings to the team is a blessing.”

Diego Ribera, Valencia’s youngest debutant: “Ferrán is a player that stands out. He plays the same way at youth level, for the reserves and for the first team. The players who keep enjoying it in the same way at every level are the players who end up succeeding in football.”

Santi Denia, Spain Under-17 coach: “He’s got all he needs to reach the very top. Speed, ability … he’s the complete package technically. He is combative, but what he has above all is the pace and directness in one-on-ones that modern footballers need.”
