Since the early 1990s, the Premier League has been home to many top midfielders, with Roy Keane being one of the most iconic players of that era. Keane played 475 games for Manchester United over 12-and-a-half years, winning multiple titles and earning a spot in the Premier League Hall of Fame. However, current player Mario Lemina recently suggested that Fernandinho, who played for Manchester City, is actually a better midfielder than Keane. Fernandinho, who was signed by City for around £30m in 2013, had a successful nine-year spell at the club, winning five Premier League trophies and making a significant impact.
Despite opinions from others like Paul Dickov stating that players like Rodri have surpassed Fernandinho’s defensive midfield role, there is no denying the impact and success the Brazilian had during his time at Manchester City. Lemina’s ranking of Fernandinho above Keane in a blind ranking challenge on a social media platform may come as a surprise to many football fans, given Keane’s status as one of the best midfielders in Premier League history. However, it showcases the high regard in which Fernandinho is held by his peers and highlights his contribution to Manchester City’s success over the years.
