Guardiola’s team selection, which included safer choices like Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan over more creative options like Phil Foden and Savinho, did not pay off in terms of attacking flair.
The decision to play Gundogan as a number 10, where he struggled to make an impact, and to persist with players like Walker and Bernardo in roles where they may not excel, were highlighted as tactical errors on Guardiola’s part. Despite his status as an elite manager, Guardiola’s missteps in player profiling and team selection played a significant role in City’s failure to secure a win against Newcastle.
