Txiki Begiristain, the sporting director of Manchester City, should consult with Pep Guardiola before signing any player, as Guardiola’s preferences for players can change from season to season. Despite City’s success employing a wing pairing of Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish in 2023, they signed Jeremy Doku the following season, who has a different playing style. Guardiola’s tactical tweaks and feedback are crucial in determining the type of player City should sign. Guardiola’s hesitance in signing Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is due to already having options like Bernardo and Phil Foden for the right-wing position.
Eze’s versatility as an attacking midfielder and winger is seen as similar to Grealish, but his lack of speed and ability to play out wide make Guardiola hesitant about signing him. With the recent signing of Savinho, who offers experience on both flanks as a natural winger, City no longer see Eze as a priority transfer target. Guardiola’s understanding of his squad and strategic approach have led City to resist pursuing a deal for Eze despite his growing status within English football.
