Ilkay Gundogan is considered Manchester City’s greatest-ever captain after Vincent Kompany, leading the team to a treble in June 2023. Reports suggest that Barcelona may sell Gundogan to City for free, with Pep Guardiola supporting the move. There is speculation that Gundogan could be appointed as captain upon his return, potentially causing tension with current captain Kyle Walker.
Despite the potential for conflict, Gundogan’s leadership abilities are acclaimed, and he has demonstrated his leadership qualities on the field in the past. He does not necessarily need the captain’s armband to be a leader at City, as his performances and influence have already shown his capability as a natural leader within the squad. Guardiola values the close bond in the dressing room, suggesting that disrupting this harmony by stripping Walker of the captaincy for Gundogan may not be worth the risk.
Gundogan has exhibited leadership qualities through his performances, stepping up in crucial moments for City even without holding the armband. His impact on the team has been evident, with key goals and performances in high-pressure situations. Returning to City without being named captain would not diminish Gundogan’s ability to lead by example and inspire his teammates, given his track record of stepping up when needed.
