City are in the last 16 of the competition for the ninth consecutive season after Wednesday night’s 2-0 third round victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, City turned on the charm in the second 45 to seal their place in the hat. Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring with a brilliant free-kick in the 53rd minute.
Julian Alvarez was on hand just five minutes later to tap home a second as their progression was secured. City were left thankful for their ‘keeper Stefan Ortega who produced a series of top-class saves to deny Christian Pulisic, Lewis Hall and Raheem Sterling.
Victory on Wednesday night has seen the Blues qualify for the last 16 of the competition ahead of the break for the winter World Cup which begins following this weekend’s Premier League matchday.
Pep Guardiola’s side were winners of the Carabao Cup four years in a row in the 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.
