Manchester City recently finalized the transfer of Savinho, a Brazilian international, to the Etihad Stadium, kicking off their summer transfer business. The 20-year-old’s arrival was met with social media frenzy as fans speculated on what shirt number he would choose for the upcoming season. Despite the potential availability of the number 7 shirt, Savinho decided to go with number 26 as a tribute to his long-time hero, Riyad Mahrez.
Savinho expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City and explained that Mahrez had been an inspiration to him, hence his decision to choose the number 26 shirt. He will be the first player to wear that number since Mahrez, who left the club last summer. Other players who have worn the number 26 shirt at Manchester City include Martín Demichelis, Tal Ben Haim, Paul Bosvelt, and Kåre Ingebrigtsen.
Savinho is expected to make his debut for Manchester City in early August after being granted extended holiday weeks and missing the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. The young Brazilian is eager to showcase his skills and follow in the footsteps of his idol, Mahrez, as he begins his journey with the Premier League champions.
