West Ham United have secured an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of 28-year-old midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The Athletic reported that West Ham was determined to strengthen its midfield during the current transfer window and had identified Phillips as a priority target. The club has successfully negotiated a deal with Manchester City to acquire Phillips’ services.

City was willing to offload Phillips in the summer, considering a loan move, as the England international had become surplus to requirements. Despite signing with City in the summer of 2022 after an impressive spell with Leeds United, Phillips failed to secure a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup.

Having only played 319 minutes in 10 matches, Phillips decided to seek first-team football elsewhere as he prepared for the Euros. While other clubs, such as Juventus, expressed interest in the midfielder, West Ham United ultimately reached an agreement with City for a loan move. The London club, facing injury issues, sought to bolster their midfield options, and Phillips’ experience in the Premier League made him an attractive prospect.

There were no obstacles in terms of personal terms, as the player was eager for regular playing time, and West Ham was willing to accommodate him. With the clubs having reached an agreement, the official announcement of the move is expected once Phillips returns to England with the City squad from their training camp in Abu Dhabi. Despite West Ham’s previous transfers following the sale of Declan Rice, the addition of Phillips provided the additional defensive midfield depth that manager David Moyes desired.
