West Ham boss David Moyes has made an admission about Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder joined Manchester City.

Phillips was chased by the Hammers during the January transfer window but ended up staying at Leeds.

The 26-year-old England international eventually joined Manchester City in the summer for around £45 million (The Daily Mail).

The Guardian claimed back in January that West Ham had a £50 million bid for the midfielder knocked back.

Phillips will undoubtedly be a fine addition for Man City and Hammers boss Moyes will be gutted that he didn’t win the race for the midfielder’s signature.

The West Ham boss has opened up about missing out on the now Manchester City midfielder back in January.

When discussing his transfer business at West Ham during a wide-ranging interview with The Daily Mail, Moyes disappointedly admitted that the Hammers had offered more money to Leeds for Phillips than Manchester City eventually signed him for:

“We bid more than that. We’re trying to be competitive with the big teams. If we can’t, we have to find another way of keeping up with them.”

These Moyes’ comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City supporters.

“There’s no way Leeds would have sold him to us in January, that relegation battle was calling. I still don’t think they’d get him had it been June though, when the choice is City or West Ham most players will probably want the silverware.”

“Philips had to weigh his move… He probably saw no difference in leaving Leads then go to westham he wanted when he leaves leads atleast he leaves for some team he views as kinder ahead of the team he was in.. a team that was to add alot of qualities in him and also pep factor”
