Vitor Reis has done everything asked of him during Manchester City’s pre-season tour, but his performances have created a welcome dilemma for Enzo Maresca rather than providing an immediate answer.
The highly-rated Brazilian defender has impressed in City’s opening friendlies against Inter Milan and the K-League All-Stars, showcasing the composure, intelligence and technical ability that convinced the club he could become a cornerstone of their defence in the years ahead.
Despite those encouraging displays, Maresca has revealed that no final decision has been made on where Reis will play his football this season. The Manchester City boss insists the club will assess the young defender’s development after pre-season before determining the next step in his career.
With the new campaign fast approaching, the question is whether Reis is ready to compete for regular minutes at the Etihad or if another loan spell would better serve his long-term development.
Maresca impressed by Reis in pre-season
Reis has quietly been one of Manchester City’s standout performers during the club’s summer preparations.

Those qualities have certainly not gone unnoticed by Maresca.
Maresca confirms no final decision
Following the victory over the K-League All-Stars, Maresca admitted he has been pleased with Reis’ progress but stressed that the club will only decide his immediate future after pre-season comes to an end.
The City manager explained that Reis has been working well throughout the summer and expressed his satisfaction with the defender’s development.
However, he also made it clear that the same approach applies to many of the younger players currently involved with the first-team squad.
Rather than making an immediate decision, City intend to evaluate the situation once the squad returns to Manchester before determining the best pathway for each player’s development.
Importantly, Maresca emphasised that the club’s priority will be making the decision that best benefits the player rather than simply addressing first-team squad needs.

Girona spell appears to have accelerated his progress
One reason for Reis’ improvement may well be the valuable experience he gained during last season’s loan spell with Girona.
Regular football in La Liga exposed him to a higher level of competition and provided opportunities to develop against elite forwards on a weekly basis.
Those experiences appear to have accelerated his growth considerably.
The defender now looks more comfortable dealing with physical battles while retaining the calmness in possession that first made him such a highly-rated prospect in Brazil.

Instead of returning as an inexperienced prospect, Reis now looks much closer to being capable of contributing consistently at senior level.
Stay or go out on loan again?
Maresca’s comments inevitably raise one important question.
Should Reis remain at Manchester City this season or spend another year playing regular football elsewhere?
There is little doubt the Brazilian possesses the talent to eventually become a first-team regular at the Etihad. His technical ability, composure under pressure and tactical awareness all fit City’s style of play perfectly.
The bigger issue is opportunities.
Competition for places remains fierce, and consistent minutes are often difficult for young defenders to secure at a club competing for every major trophy.
If Reis were to become City’s fifth-choice centre-back, his appearances could be limited across the campaign. While training alongside elite players offers obvious benefits, regular competitive football often proves more valuable for a young player’s development.
A second loan move could therefore make sense.
Whether that involves another Premier League club or a side competing in the Champions League, regular starts at a high level may accelerate his progress even further before he returns ready to challenge for a permanent place in City’s strongest XI.

While there may still be uncertainty over where Reis will spend this season, there appears to be very little doubt regarding his long-term future.
