Manchester City is known for their ability to convince top players to join the club, with the allure of working with Pep Guardiola and the promise of winning medals typically enough to seal the deal. However, the club is not willing to overspend on any player, as demonstrated by their decision to walk away from deals for the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Harry Maguire, and Fred. City also halted their pursuit of Marc Cucurella when Manchester United inflated the fees. Additionally, they abandoned their chase of Lucas Paqueta due to an investigation by the FA into alleged betting rules breaches.
After losing captain Ilkay Gundogan, City sought a quality replacement in Lucas Paqueta, who was valued at £85m by West Ham. The deal collapsed when the FA opened an investigation against Paqueta, ultimately leading to City abandoning the transfer. Former coach Kevin Nolan thought the move to City was imminent and highlighted City’s interest in Paqueta’s out-of-possession skills. Despite the setback, Paqueta remained focused on performing well for West Ham, expressing respect for the club and indicating a willingness to finish the season strong amidst the speculation surrounding his future.
