Manchester City fans have been hailing Nathan Ake following his performance against Brentford, helping Pep Guardiola’s side to extend lead at the top of the table.
It’s now 10 Premier League wins in a row for Guardiola’s City, after a 16th minute Phil Foden strike was enough to secure the points against a well-drilled Brentford side away from home.
While the visitors were extremely shaky in the initial spells of the game, with Ederson saving their blushes on multiple occasions, their quality came through on the night after a delicious Kevin De Bruyne cross was met by Foden.
It was far from a vintage performance, but they still claimed all three points and now sit eight clear at the top of the Premier League table.
The big talking points was that Manchester City go eight points clear at the top as Chelsea surrendered a late equaliser against Brighton following Liverpool’s loss on Tuesday that put the Reds nine points behind Guardiola’s side.
Indeed, it was a night to remember for Nathan Ake, who started at left-back with Joao Cancelo slotting in at the opposite flank, and playing an important role in keeping the score at 1-0 and extending Pep Guardiola’s lead at the top of the table.
The sight of Nathan Ake’s name on the teamsheet elicited a few groans from Manchester City fans before the game, but when Brentford started banking on set-pieces to unsettle City, the reason for Ake’s inclusion became clear.
The Netherlands international made a couple of good recovery tackles and proved very strong aerially, monstrous in the air, mopping up everything that came his way and tucking into midfield smoothly.
City signed Nathan Ake from AFC Bournemouth for a reported fee of £40m according to BBC Sport, yet Ake’s time with the club has mainly been spent on the bench.
Last night was one of his best games yet for City as he looked like a natural defensive left-back. It was a solid display from the former Chelsea defender who was surprisingly the best out of the back four.
Man City fans, then, were all over Twitter praising Ake for his display. Here’s what some of them had to say on Twitter…
