Manchester City fans were surprised when Julian Alvarez was sold for over £80 million in the summer transfer window. Despite being a key player for City last season, Alvarez was unhappy with his role in the squad and was eventually sold to Atletico Madrid for a club-record fee. City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, made a smart move by selling Alvarez for a significant profit after initially signing him for £14 million.
Since joining Atletico Madrid, Alvarez has made 12 appearances and scored three goals, showing promise but not yet fully demonstrating his potential. Spanish football expert Alvaro Romeo believes that Alvarez is still adapting and has the potential to shine even more in the future. While City may miss Alvarez’s contributions, the decision to sell him for a substantial fee was ultimately a practical move for the club.
It was understandable for City to accept the offer for Alvarez due to the high price tag and the player’s desire for a new challenge. Despite his success at City, the club officials are likely content with the decision to sell Alvarez, especially considering the strong performances of other forwards like Erling Haaland. Alvarez’s start at Atletico Madrid has been decent, but City will likely have no regrets about the sale as the season progresses.
