Manchester United are on the verge of signing Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported initial fee of €50 million, with potential add-ons taking the total to €60 million. The Uruguayan midfielder is undergoing a medical in Manchester and is expected to sign a contract until June 2029, with a sell-on clause of up to 10%. Ugarte will provide competition for the base of midfield at United and the club will be hoping he can have a similar impact to what Rodri has had at Manchester City since his arrival in 2019.
Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand has highlighted the differences between Ugarte and Rodri, emphasizing that while Ugarte is a solid defensive midfielder, Rodri excels in his passing abilities. According to statistics, Rodri’s passing range and progressiveness far surpass that of Ugarte, making him arguably the best in the world in his position. Despite their contrasting profiles, United will be looking for Ugarte to provide stability and defensive cover in the midfield, similar to what Rodri offers for City.
