Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relays a comments from ex-Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath that claims Pep Guardiola can’t win the Champions League without the Barcelona icon.
After taking charge of the Blaugrana following a stint in charge of Barca B, Guardiola evolved the club into the greatest side in Europe and one of the greatest ever seen, with them winning two Champions League tournaments in 2009 and 2011.
He implemented his preferred ‘tiki-taka’ system of playing, which allowed Barca to sweep away all before them in the four years he was in charge.
However, Guardiola hasn’t made a European final since, failing on his principle objective at Bayern Munich and, so far, at City too.
Magath reckons that the success at Barca can be attributed therefore to the brilliance of Messi, rather than Guardiola’s prowess as a coach.
“Messi won the titles, not Guardiola,” the German told Sport Bild.
“Without Messi, this system has never worked as successfully for Guardiola, otherwise he would have won the Champions League with Bayern or Manchester City long ago.”
“Tiki-taka only works if you have players who are technically superior to their opponents. For the spectator, holding the ball, as I call it, is just boring and a top team doesn’t really need it.
“In my opinion, Guardiola generally too often gets lost in trying to win a game in advance. That tactic often ends in wrong decisions, which prevent success.”

I have never understood Bayern’s obsession with pep. Something is very wrong with most people associated with Bayern.

True Pep’s System doesn’t work against big teams that’s why he can’t win the CL without great players like Messi. True he could break some records domestically because he bullies weak teams.

Pep broke several Bundesliga records.. If Pep’s system didn’t work, how has he managed to win 29 trophies in 11 years. Did Messi create the greatest club side ever and win a sextuple in his first year?

Like Pep— CITYZEN PRATIK MAITY (@imbluemancunian) October 12, 2020
Maybe it’s because the CL is a potluck knockout competition? Not sure why so much emphasis is placed on a competition where you can go out because of one tiny player or referee mistake. Surely any manager should be judged by their league performance 🤷♂️
