During the 2024 summer transfer window, Manchester City saw numerous players leave the club either on loan or permanent deals while also making some significant signings. They brought in Savinho from Troyes for £33m and Ilkay Gundogan back to the club on a free transfer from Barcelona. The departures included Julian Alvarez’s £81m move to Atletico Madrid, Liam Delap’s £20m transfer to Ipswich Town, Joao Cancelo’s £21.2m move to Al-Hilal, Micah Hamilton’s £2m transfer to Middlesbrough, and Sergio Gomez’s £8.4m sale to Real Sociedad.
Despite making profits on some players, such as Alvarez and Delap, City also incurred losses on others, like Cancelo and Gomez. The club’s ability to secure significant amounts of money for players who may not have had a clear route to first-team football demonstrates the strength of their youth academy and strategic selling decisions. Overall, City have made some good deals this summer, although some transfers, like Gomez’s, did not work out as expected and resulted in financial losses for the club.
