Manchester City have had incredible success in the transfer market over the last eight years, with Pep Guardiola assembling one of the best football squads of all time. They have enjoyed unprecedented success in the Premier League, winning the league four years in a row and becoming the second English team to win the treble. While most signings have been successful, Guardiola has made a few major recruitment mistakes, with Kalvin Phillips being one of them. Phillips, signed for £45m from Leeds United in 2022, struggled with injuries and lack of confidence at City, leading to a loan move to Ipswich Town.

Another transfer flop for Guardiola was Claudio Bravo, signed to replace Joe Hart as the goalkeeper but failing to adapt to the Premier League. Angelino, brought back from loan to PSV Eindhoven in 2019, also disappointed as left-back cover. Matheus Nunes, signed from Wolves for £54m, struggled to establish himself in the squad, and former signing Nolito only lasted one season at the club. These transfer flops highlight that even a successful club like Manchester City can make mistakes in recruitment and player selection.
