Despite several senior players at Manchester City only recently returning to training after their break following Euro 2024, a quartet of youngsters started against Manchester United in the FA Community Shield. Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly, James McAtee, and Oscar Bobb were among the names included in the starting lineup. Manchester City emerged victorious in a 7-6 win on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, with some of the youngsters playing a crucial role in the victory. Pep Guardiola specifically requested not to sell or loan McAtee this summer, praising his specific qualities and abilities.
Guardiola gave McAtee instructions to play in various positions during the game, including as a left-back when playing out from the back and as a natural number 10 when O’Reilly was taken off. Despite not shining as bright as some other young players, McAtee had a solid outing in what was a significant occasion for him. Guardiola’s decision to keep him at City shows a huge show of faith in the young midfielder, highlighting his quality in tight spaces and his ability to thrive when given the ball in attacking areas. Moving forward, McAtee will aim to showcase his potential and continue to impress under Guardiola’s guidance.
