Pep Guardiola has batted away questions about whether he’ll extend his Manchester City contract in his latest pre-match press conference.
The Spaniard was speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool, where victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side could open up a 16-point gap between the two sides.
Having joined City in 2016 and led them to four of the last five Premier League titles, Guardiola’s side once again look favourites to win the league.
They are the only remaining unbeaten team in the Premier League this season and are kept off the top spot by just Arsenal.
But with Guardiola’s current set to expire at the end of the 2022-23 season, there are fears he may depart in similar fashion to the sabbatical period he took when leaving Barcelona in 2012 if a new agreement is not made.
Guardiola has publicly declared that even though he’d “like to stay ten more years”, his future would not be sorted until the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign.
Now, with the season almost three months old, Guardiola has again been asked about whether or not he intends to stay at the Etihad.
But as usual, the former Barcelona boss was quick to insist that his focus remains on what’s immediately ahead for City, and not whether or not he’ll be staying in Manchester.
“As you know, I’m not thinking one second about that,” Guardiola replied. “Two or three weeks before the World Cup, [games are] the most important thing.”
These Guardiola’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
