Pep Guardiola is ready to raid the transfer market in a bid to put Manchester City back on top of the Premier League after failing to keep pace with Jurgen Klopp’s relentless Liverpool this season, seeing the Reds streak to the title with seven games to spare
City’s underwhelming 2019/20 Premier League campaign laid bare the defensive frailties in Pep Guardiola’s squad. As lethal as the Citizens are going forward, they are porous at the back.
With the summer transfer window due to open in 8 days time, City have been heavily linked with a move for many defenders like Upamecano, Milan Skriniar, Diego Carlos, José Giménez and Kalidou Koulibaly in recent weeks.
The Telegraph earlier this week reported that the 33-year-old has emerged as a target for Pep Guardiola fews days after English football pundit and retired professional footballer, Jermaine Jenas suggested on BBC Radio 5 Live that the Citizens should pick Tottenham Hotspur defender.
Former England international Danny Mills has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho won’t be “bothered in the slightest” by the prospect of losing him to Manchester City.
“It would be a blow. I do wonder whether he’s suited to Manchester City though” He told Football Insider.
“He’s got experience and he’s very, very good, but it’s one of those, I think you can’t control it. If you don’t want a player, you have to accept that they’re going to go wherever they want. If you’re saying you don’t want him cause he’s not good enough, pretty much.
“Effectively you’re saying you don’t want him, so if somebody else wants him, good luck to them. I don’t think Spurs or Mourinho will be bothered in the slightest where he goes.
The 33 Belgium international is seen as a short-term solution in Guardiola’s defence and also offers cover at left-back. His experience under Mauricio Pochettino and for his country means he is expected to adapt to City’s style of play.
Vertonghen has been an ever-present figure for Spurs since joining in the summer of 2012, but the 33-year-old has barely featured under Jose Mourinho this calendar year – even before the global health crisis – and an exit from North London at the end of this season is happening.
Will Vertonghen be a good signing for Manchester City?
Even though he is happy on the ball, uses both feet and can play in several positions, Probably not, considering his age and the fact he been on Tottenham’s bench for most of this season. Manchester City are a club who always have the long-term in mind when it comes to transfers.
Eric Garcia is quietly developing into a legitimate centre-back option for Manchester City, as he continued his fine start to first-team life against Liverpool this week.
