Akanji described Messi as unpredictable and difficult to guard, highlighting the Argentine’s exceptional skills with the ball. Despite only facing Messi twice during his career, Akanji found him to be a challenging adversary, particularly noting Messi’s ability to change direction quickly and unexpectedly on the field.
During their encounters in the 2019/20 season, Akanji’s Borussia Dortmund team faced off against Messi’s Barcelona in the Champions League, with Messi scoring and assisting goals in a 3-1 victory for Barcelona. With Messi’s impressive record of 729 goals and 354 assists in his career, including a significant number of goals under City manager Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, it is understandable why Akanji considers Messi to be any defender’s worst nightmare on the field.
