Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has experienced both victories and defeats against Manchester City in the Manchester derbies. Despite being part of the team that suffered a 4-1 loss to City in March 2022, Maguire also played in United’s 2-0 win against City at Old Trafford in March 2020. Throughout these encounters, Maguire gained a new perspective on City’s style of play and witnessed the talents of players like Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, and Kalvin Phillips up close, both in club and international settings.
Maguire, who has played alongside Walker and Stones for England, particularly admires Walker’s speed and recovery pace. In a video with GOAL, Maguire selected Walker when asked to choose a player for their speed, highlighting the importance of Walker’s pace in bailing England out in high-stakes games. Despite Walker’s attributes, Maguire has also been aware of his own limitations, such as pace, and appreciates how Walker’s speed has complemented his defensive abilities during international competitions.
