Pep Guardiola has announced that central defensive player Josko Gvardiol has suffered an ankle ligament injury that will keep him sidelined for several weeks.

The Croatia international was not in the lineup for Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Everton, and he also missed a Champions League training session following the match.

Gvardiol was unable to participate in Manchester City’s Champions League match in Copenhagen, along with his Croatian teammate Mateo Kovacic, who is nearing the end of his recovery from a knee injury.

Guardiola discussed the latest setback to his injury-plagued squad after Manchester City’s crucial 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen, revealing that Gvardiol’s ankle ligament problem will keep him out for two to three weeks.

“Josko (Gvardiol will be out for) two weeks or three weeks,” Guardiola told the media. “He has (a problem with a ligament) in his ankle.”

This means that Gvardiol will miss several Premier League matches as well as an FA Cup fifth-round match. However, there is hope that he could return to the squad in time for the clash against Erik ten Hag’s side on March 3 and the UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg.

Guardiola expressed concern about the growing number of injuries in his squad and the impact it is having on their busy schedule. Manchester City managed well in the absence of three players in their recent European fixture, but the match resulted in two more injury concerns with Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish sustaining injuries.

Guardiola is expected to provide further updates on the fitness of his squad ahead of Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea. The injuries continue to pose a challenge for the team as they navigate a packed schedule of matches.
