Manchester City has made a significant addition to their team with the signing of Claudio Echeverri from River Plate.

The 18-year-old is the club’s first signing of the January transfer window and has chosen Manchester City over strong interest from Barcelona and Chelsea.

Echeverri joins a list of South American prodigies at Manchester City, following in the footsteps of Gabriel Jesus, Maximo Perrone, and Julian Alvarez.

Echeverri gained attention when he captained Argentina at the recent Under-17 FIFA World Cup, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-final.

Although he was out of contract at River Plate until 2024, he is expected to return to the club on loan before making the move to Manchester City later in 2025.

The terms of Echeverri’s transfer to Manchester City include an initial fee of £12.5 million, with the player returning to River Plate on loan as part of the agreement.

He has signed a contract with Manchester City until 2028 but will remain in Argentina until at least December 2024.

A statement from Manchester City announced the completion of Echeverri’s signing, indicating that the 18-year-old has signed with the club until June 2028 but will continue at River Plate before moving to the Etihad Stadium in January of the following year.

Echeverri will be given a shirt number when he moves to Manchester City after completing his loan spell at River Plate.

This signing marks an exciting addition to the Manchester City team and adds to the club’s growing collection of talented young players.
