Manchester City has agreed to pay a significant initial sum to Philadelphia Union for the transfer of 14-year-old player, Cavan Sullivan. Dubbed ‘Captain America’ by his coaches and teammates, Sullivan had previously attracted interest from Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. The teenager is set to join the City Football Group network and is expected to move directly to the Etihad Stadium when he turns 18, making it a record-breaking deal for an MLS club.
Sullivan recently made his professional debut and was named player of the tournament in the 2023 CONCACAF Championship with the USNMNT Under-15s. The transfer agreement between Manchester City and Philadelphia Union includes a rich deal for Sullivan to remain in the MLS until the age of 18, before moving to Manchester. Manchester City will pay an initial £1.7 million for the transfer, with the potential for the deal to reach up to $5 million with bonuses.
Once Sullivan turns 18, he is expected to join Manchester City, however, there is a possibility that he may move to the CFG earlier if his development surpasses the level of the MLS. The deal also includes a substantial sell-on clause for Philadelphia Union. Sullivan will be following in the footsteps of other American players who have made the move to Manchester City, such as Zack Steffen, Carli Lloyd, and Abby Dahlkemper.
