Barcelona and Manchester City are reportedly in disagreement over the valuation of Portugal international full-back Joao Cancelo, with the two clubs differing by €20 million in their assessments.
The 29-year-old has fallen out of favor at the Etihad Stadium after a breakdown in relations with the coaching staff during Manchester City’s treble-winning season. Following the breakdown, Cancelo made a last-minute move to Bayern Munich on a six-month agreement during last season’s January transfer window, before returning to City for pre-season ahead of the ongoing campaign.
Despite featuring in some of City’s matches in the far-east during their warm-up period last summer, Cancelo was sent on another loan, this time to FC Barcelona, on a 12-month deal. The Catalan club is now keen to retain him on a permanent basis, but their valuation of the player differs greatly from that of Manchester City.
According to the information from Spanish newspaper Sport, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City values Cancelo at €40 million, while Barcelona is only willing to pay up to €20 million to turn their ongoing loan agreement into a permanent transfer this summer.
As a result, the transfer situation is expected to drag on, with potential competition from other clubs further complicating matters for Barcelona. However, there are currently no specific indications of other suitors, giving Barcelona a clear run at the player at present.
As for Manchester City, they are reportedly assessing options for a long-term replacement for right-back Kyle Walker, with Yan Couto being one of the club’s brightest talents and a potential option for the future in that role.
Yan Couto has earned himself his first senior Brazil cap following exemplary performances on loan at Girona, and he is high up on the club’s radar with expectations being that he will return to the club this summer for pre-season. The situation with Cancelo and his potential transfer to Barcelona is likely to unfold over the coming months, with the player ultimately having a large say in his future destination.
