Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Tommy Doyle from Manchester City, with the deal officially taking effect on July 1, 2024. Doyle, who first joined City at the age of eight, rejected a loan move to Preston North End in 2020 to fight for a spot in Pep Guardiola’s squad. He had a successful loan spell with Sheffield United last season, helping them earn promotion to the Premier League and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
Doyle also had temporary stints with SV Hamburg and Cardiff City before making his permanent move to Wolves. The 22-year-old made his City debut in a Carabao Cup match in 2019 and will now depart after a 14-year association with the club. Wolves will pay a fee just under £5 million to City and the deal includes a 50 per cent sell-on and buy-back clause.
The departure of Doyle from Manchester City is the first of many expected changes for the team in the upcoming summer transfer window. Uncertainty surrounds the futures of players such as Bernardo Silva and Stefan Ortega, with Kalvin Phillips also potentially leaving. While Doyle will not be able to face City when Wolves play them in the Premier League due to the timing of the deal, his move marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be a busy transfer period.
