Manchester City have reached out to Martin Demichelis about their new signing Claudio Echeverri, as reported by The Athletic. Demichelis, who was an Argentine player and left the Etihad Stadium in 2016 when Pep Guardiola took over as manager, is currently the manager of River Plate, where Echeverri comes from. According to The Athletic, conversations were held between Joan Patsy, Manchester City’s Head of Scouting Operations in South America, and Demichelis before the decision was made to invest a total of £26m to secure Echeverri’s signature.
Demichelis provided a glowing review of Echeverri, as Manchester City is making a significant investment in an 18-year-old player. It’s worth noting that Guardiola was not heavily involved in the operation, but did give his approval to the deal after being shown footage of the South American player.
Echeverri won’t be making an appearance for Manchester City anytime soon as he will remain on loan at River Plate for the remainder of 2024 under the management of Demichelis in the first team. This appears to be the most sensible plan, allowing Echeverri to continue his development in a comfortable environment. It is believed that he will be in a better position to make an impact in the Premier League by 2025.
Echeverri, who recently turned 18, still has significant room for development before he can be considered a first-team option under Guardiola at Manchester City. This strategic move will hopefully set him up for success in the future. The move has gotten approval, though Guardiola wasn’t heavily involved in the process, sending Echeverri on loan back to River Plate while he develops as a player.
