Manchester City are facing a significant financial loss on midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is unlikely to be part of Pep Guardiola’s plans for the upcoming season. Phillips has struggled to secure a spot in City’s midfield and a successful loan spell at West Ham did not improve his prospects.
City are open to offers as low as £20 million for Phillips, a significant decrease from the initial £42 million investment in 2022. The club is actively looking for a new defensive midfielder, with Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United and Brazil on their radar. However, negotiations for a transfer fee are ongoing, with City unwilling to meet Guimaraes’ now-expired release clause valuation of £100 million.
Despite the financial setback, City are determined to find a permanent solution for Phillips and reinforce their midfield with a versatile player who can operate in different roles. The club’s priority is to secure a new midfielder this summer, as they prepare for another competitive season in the Premier League.
