UEFA has ruled that Manchester City and their sister club Girona cannot engage in inter-club transfer activity between specific dates, due to potential conflict with multi-club ownership rules. Both clubs qualified for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, causing uncertainty about their futures and ownership structure. As a result, shares in Girona have been transferred to independent trustees to comply with UEFA regulations for the upcoming season.
Despite the ruling, Manchester City can still sign Girona’s on-loan winger Savio this summer, but will not be allowed to transfer players to or from Girona until September 2025. The two clubs have exchanged multiple players in recent seasons, with the latest deal involving Brazilian international Yan Couto playing on loan at Girona. Reports indicate that Manchester City’s James McAtee could also be of interest to Girona, but any temporary or permanent moves are likely to be blocked by UEFA’s ruling.
The agreement between Manchester City and Girona not only affects their transfer activities, but will also impact the individual playing squads at both clubs for the upcoming campaign. Manchester City will have to make adjustments in their player recruitment strategy without the option of trading with their sister club until the specified date in 2025.
